O'Neil was a student at high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She made it to the top 100 rounds after the judges praised her vocal ability. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered major losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. They were stunned by the decision and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performance since then, always finished in the third place. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil beat Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in time of the show. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
